My Dress Up Darling (Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru) is a slice of life anime that is about a young high school age man named Wakana Gojo. Wakana is a quiet boy due to taking up his grandfather's prized art talent of making hina dolls. Such is the detail and concentration needed for a doll's creation that perfecting the craft has kept Wakana in quiet isolation most of his young years all the way through middle school to high school. To say the least, his social skills suffered, and his confidence has regulated him to a self-imposed background character in his life. That is until he has reason to talk to her...
Enter Marin Kitagawa the pretty, popular, and outgoing social butterfly, whose infectious personality soon has her seeking out Wakana for help with her cosplay costume when she discovers his skill for using a sewing machine. Not only does this tall, good-natured, well-behaved guy have a knack for making clothing, Marin is delighted he doesn't find her love for cosplay strange for a girl her age. Marin is just as happy when Wakana's hina doll skills will let him accept nothing less than perfection when it comes to his costume designs for her. The pleasant surprise as a result to their partnership is slow blend of friendship, excitement, obstacles, discovery of new techniques, and people as Marin associates Wakana with the world of cosplay. As events proceed, Marin is finding out about new and evolving romantic feelings she is having for her tall, quiet-spoken, costume designer. Unknown to Marin, Wakana also has developing feelings that are coming to the forefront now that he is socializing a lot more with the pretty part-time magazine model. Can cosplay make the young couple more than working partners?
As a guy who likes plenty of explosions, sci-fi effects, and scantily clad women with shapely legs and heavy cleavage, I have to say I was not put out by the first season of this title and the way it proceeded.
